2019 NBA Draft Week!

This is among my favorite times of the year, so with the draft already here tomorrow, I'll be writing my annual thoughts about all the moves occurring around it in this post with constant updates. So check back whenever a deal is made and enjoy the chaos!

(Player option/Team option/Partial or non-guaranteed)

Grizzlies receive:

Mike Conley$32,511,624$34,502,132

Jazz receive:

Jae Crowder$7,815,533
Kyle Korver$7,500,000
Grayson Allen$2,429,400$2,545,320$4,054,695
#23 pick
2020 1st round pick (protected 1-7 & 15-30 through '21, 1-6 in '22, 1-3 in '23, and 1 in '24, then becomes two 2nd round picks in '25)

The long awaited trade between Memphis and Utah finally happened, and with the Jazz willing to give up this much, it's a surprise that this didn't get completed at the trade deadline. Ricky Rubio's expiring contract could've been used to match salaries rather than use up all of their cap space now, but they must not have wanted to sacrifice their depth midseason. Including a future pick in addition to last year's 1st rounder in Allen and the #23 pick tomorrow is a high price to pay to get a bigger scoring threat than Rubio at that position. While Conley does provide more spacing for Donovan Mitchell, I'm just not sure I'd trade away that much for a soon to be 32 year old with such a large contract. Once this deal is completed on July 6th, they'll be right at the cap with Derrick Favors' non-guaranteed contract looking to be picked up after he wasn't included in the trade, so they'll only have the Room MLE and minimum contracts to fill out the rotation since the cap holds of Rubio, Thabo Sefolosha, and Ekpe Udoh will have to be renounced. If they did decide to waive Favors along with their other non-guaranteed salaries, they could get to around $20 million in cap space add to the bench, but I'd expect them to rely on their strong starting five of Conley, Mitchell, Joe Ingles, Favors, and Rudy Gobert with Dante Exum, Royce O'Neale, and maybe Georges Niang providing support.

You could probably tell that I like this deal a lot more from the Grizzlies' side as they've set themselves up well in their rebuild, though it must be tough to part with a franchise cornerstone. It is a bit unfortunate that Conley is staying in the West where he still will face tough competition to make his first All-Star team but alas. They know they have their point guard of the future coming in tomorrow once they draft Ja Morant 2nd overall, and now they have the 23rd pick and a future 1st to join him and Jaren Jackson Jr. as a dynamic young core. The pick protections are pretty well done as they'll get either a late lottery pick in 2020 or 2021 or a minimally protected 1st in the vaunted "double draft" of 2020 when high schoolers are expected to be eligible again. I'm not a big Grayson Allen fan, but last year's 21st overall pick is worth taking a cheap flier on as he turns 24 in October and could potentially provide some much needed shooting. Korver and to lesser extent Crowder help in that regard for this year, but I'd expect there to be a decent market for those veterans on expiring contracts to gather even more assets. Only $3,440,00 of Korver's salary is guaranteed until July 7th, so Memphis could potentially waive him along with Avery Bradley and a couple other partially guaranteed contracts to get up to about $25 million in cap room. However, it's more likely that they re-sign Jonas Valanciunas and Delon Wright and stay as an over the cap team with the MLE, BAE, and multiple Trade Exceptions available. Then next year when Chandler Parsons' contract is off the books, they'll be in position to be among the league leaders in cap space.
As if there was any doubt that Ja Morant was going to Memphis at #2.
Heat receive:
#44 pick

Hawks receive:
Conditional 2024 2nd round pick
Cash considerations

Well, that wasn't exactly the trade Atlanta has been rumored to be targeting, but they wanted to do something with all their extra selections since they already have picks 8, 10, 17, 35, and 41. Miami's 2024 2nd already has the usual protection of picks 31-55 for another trade, so that could mean it's reverse protected for 56-60 now and thus likely to convey to Atlanta. This is good business for the Heat since they only had the #13 pick tomorrow before this, and they've been able to find diamonds in the rough in the past. As an aside, they now no longer have their normal 2nd rounder tomorrow, in 2020, 2021, 2023, or 2024.

Pistons receive:

Tony Snell$11,392,857$12,178,571
#30 pick

Bucks receive:
Jon Leuer$9,508,043

That was fast. There were a lot of rumors in recent days that Milwaukee was willing to sacrifice their 1st round pick to get out of Snell's money since they're preparing for a Khris Middleton max contract and large Malcolm Brogdon offer sheet on top of trying to re-sign Brook Lopez, but I'm a little surprised they still had to take back a salary like Leuer's, albeit as an expiring contract. It does provide some needed front court depth in the short term while still clearing salary for next year at least. Now once they clear $17 million by waiving George Hill's partially guaranteed contract, they'll be about $13.7 million under the cap (before inking the Middleton and Brogdon contracts) and could still waive Pat Connaughton and/or Sterling Brown if really needed to clear another $1.5 million or so. They only have Non-Bird rights for Lopez since he was on just a one year deal, so they'll need that cap space to give him the raise he earned. They could also stay over the cap and try to just use the Full MLE that's projected for about $9.2 million to re-sign him, but that would also hard cap them. Thus, this deal gives them a bit more flexibility now and into the future.

I like this move for Detroit to pick up a draft pick in addition to providing a necessary body on the wings. They theoretically could've gotten close to a max contract slot next summer before this move, but there weren't a lot of realistic targets for them to go after. Instead, they add another cheap young option with the 30th pick and improve their playoff team from this past season. They're not about $7 million under the luxury tax threshold with the ability to use any amount of the Full MLE to fill out their rotation if they're comfortable getting that close to the line.

Warriors receive:

#41 pick

Hawks receive:

2024 2nd round pick
$1.3 million

Atlanta GM Travis Schlenk is serious about not wanting to have too many young players since they roster is already going to be so youthful, so it's another deal to alleviate that while picking up a future asset. I guess there aren't too many Euro-stashes appealing to him in this year's crop.

For Golden State, this is cheaper than they've paid for 2nd rounders in the past in exchange for that pick down the line, but that's not too concerning since they had all of their future 1st rounders and all but next year's 2nd before this move. While this draft may not be overly impressive overall, the strength of it is the depth of similar value between the 25 to 45 range, so now they can get perhaps a couple of wings with picks 28 and 41 like Mattise Thybulle and Dylan Windler. It's worth noting that while working for the Santa Cruz Warriors, I've been talking up young Serbian big man Alen Smailagic on Twitter after they traded up for him in the G League draft last year to develop off the bench. He's been consistently linked to them at #58 by Draft Express on ESPN, but they could be concerned he won't last that long and made the move with Schlenk, who came from their front office, to ensure they get their guy.

Pacers receive:

T.J. Warren$10,810,000$11,750,000$12,690,000
#32 pick

Suns receive:
Cash considerations

Umm okay? I don't understand why Phoenix felt the need to attach a valuable pick to get rid of a productive forward who hasn't even turned 26 yet and drastically improved his 3 point shooting to 42.8% last year. His contract wasn't even that cumbersome, but at least now they can get up to around $29.5 million in cap room or about $20.7 million while still holding onto Kelly Oubre's cap hold. They still have multiple options at small forward with Josh Jackson, Mikal Bridges, and presumably Oubre, but Warren was more than capable of playing power forward next to them.

Indiana had a ton of flexibility, so this is a pretty sweet move for them to add two pieces while still being able to hold onto the cap holds of Thaddeus Young and Bojan Bogdanovic. They will have to renounce the rights to Tyreke Evans, Darren Collison, Cory Joseph, Kyle O'Quinn, and Wesley Matthews to complete this deal with cap room on July 6th, and if they do let go of their two starting forwards now that Warren is in tow, they will still have around $33 million in space.

Pelicans receive:

#8, #17, and #35 picks
Cavaliers' 2020 1st round pick (protected 1-10, then converts to 2021 and 2022 2nd round picks)

Hawks receive:

Solomon Hill$12,758,781
#4 and #57 picks
Future 2nd round pick

Things are heating up! Atlanta finally makes their move to get safely high enough for De'Andre Hunter to fill their need at forward as long rumored by Jonathan Givony. This is a bit of a hefty price for someone who doesn't appear to be clearly ahead of the rest of his cohort, but I have been a fan of his competitiveness and 3 and D potential. They still have the #10 pick, that Cleveland 1st was never likely to be conveyed, and taking on Hill's expiring deal fits into their plans for cap space this summer, so it's an understandable move for them overall. I now have them with the ability to get up to over $14 million in space, and they can keep the cap hold of either Dewayne Dedmon or Justin Anderson and still complete this trade.

Meanwhile, David Griffin continues to extract value in every deal and now can get to around $35 million in cap space if he wanted to waive their partial and non-guaranteed players, aka enough for a max contract. And as I alluded to above, the difference between the 4th and 8th best player in this draft is mostly in the eye of the beholder, so this is pretty great work to also pick up another mid-1st and a higher 2nd rounder, along with at least the potential of that Cavs pick coming. There's going to be a lot of young talent in New Orleans after tonight with the possibility of adding.

Suns receive:

Dario Saric$3,481,986
#11 pick

Timberwolves receive:

#6 pick

For as weird as the Warren trade was, this one actually makes a lot of sense for Phoenix. It wasn't likely that Darius Garland would fall to them at #6, so instead they drop down just five spots to pick up a 25 year old stretch four that fits their roster well. Saric is entering the last year of his rookie contract, but if his passing and shooting complements Deandre Ayton in the front court like I expect, they can retain him in restricted agency relatively easily since they don't have any other large salaries aside from Devin Booker and the expiring contract of Tyler Johnson.

While I don't love Minnesota giving up a talented young player like Saric, who was a key piece in the Jimmy Butler trade, it does make more sense for them to be worried about his next deal since they're already getting close to the luxury tax with the Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns contracts. They're rumored to want one of the top point guards, but I'm not sure Garland gets past Cleveland at #5. Maybe they love Coby White, or perhaps they can more easily trade with the Cavs from such a closer slot.
